Fitch Even Partner Tim Baumann Participates in USPTO AIA Trial Roundtable in Chicago

April 23, 2014

Fitch Even Partner Timothy R. Baumann was one of four IP attorneys selected to participate along with five administrative patent judges in a roundtable discussion presented yesterday in Chicago by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The purpose of the roundtable was to share information about the new American Invents Act (AIA) trials, which include inter partes reviews, post-grant reviews, covered business method reviews, and derivations. The Chicago roundtable was held at the Harold Washington Public Library and was followed by an open reception. Similar programs are being held in seven other cities across the U.S.

The program began with an overview of trials, statistics, and lessons learned, presented by Chief Judge Smith. In addition, a mock conference call was staged, with a patent owner, the petitioner, and a PTAB judge represented. Claim amendments were among the topics discussed during the “call.”
