On May 4 and 5, 2006, the United States Patent and Trademark Office presented a two day conference on "Protecting Your Intellectual Property in China and the Global Market" for business leaders in the Midwest. Phil Petti's presentation focused on taking action in the U.S. International Trade Commission to stop infringing imports .
Design Protection In The United States
On April 12, 2006, partners Stephen Favakeh and John Lyhus presented a program on design protection in the United States at the annual Licensing Executive Society International Conference in Seoul. The presentation focused on various aspects of design patents and trade dress in the automotive industry.
IP Protection Overview
On May 24, 2005, IPLAC presented a noon time seminar on various types of IP protection for an audience of intellectual property paralegals and agents. Partner Steve Parmelee provided an introduction to various types of intellectual property law, including patents, trade secrets, trademarks and copyrights. Mr. Parmelee introduced the topics via an entertaining story about "The Perils of Paula" and her journey as an entrepreneur who wants to capitalize on her newly invented cookie recipe.
Patent Licensing And Negotiation Options
On April 10, 2005, partner Steve Parmelee discussed "Patent Licensing and Negotiation Options" as part of a program entitled "Intellectual Property and RFID."
This presentation was part of a three day event on Radio Frequency Identification Technology and services titled "RFID Journal Live!" held in Chicago. Steve focused on the key terms and conditions that one should consider in negotiating licensing agreements for RFID technology and service markets, which also apply to other emerging technology markets.

Partner Joe Shipley presented this program on strategies for generating revenue from an organization's intellectual property portfolio. Mr. Shipley was assisted by Nick Peters.
Global IPR: Transference And Exportation Issues
Partner Steve Parmelee explores the problems that arise when intellectual property is shared with those outside the United States in this presentation. Mr. Parmelee discusses the risks inherent in exporting intellectual property resources without a good management plan. He also provides some pointers that can help reduce those risks.
Extrinsic Evidence-"Back Up" Or Potential "Star" Player?
Partner Phil Petti presented and moderated a nationwide roundtable discussion on the use of extrinsic evidence as part of Markman patent claim constructions. The roundtable was conducted by telephone conference and was sponsored by the Association of Patent Law Firms.
