IP Alert: European Parliament Approves EU Unitary Patent Regulations

December 11, 2012

The European Patent Office (EPO) announced today the adoption of regulations to implement a European unitary patent, a form of patent protection currently unavailable through the EPO. The unitary patent would provide legal protection for inventors in 25 participating European Union (EU) member states through one single administrative step. It is expected that the EPO will be responsible for administrative tasks such as validation and levying of annual renewal fees.

The unitary patent now must be formally adopted by the EU Council and the European Parliament, which is expected to happen soon.

Fitch Even attorneys are monitoring the progress of the unitary patent program in Europe and will report as developments occur. For more information, please contact Fitch Even partner Rudy I. Kratz.
