Fitch Even client, Katana Silicon Technologies LLC, an affiliate of Longhorn IP, secured a $9.2 million damages award in a patent infringement suit against GlobalFoundries, Inc. and its U.S. subsidiaries. A federal jury in the Western District of Texas found GlobalFoundries infringed one claim of Katana’s U.S. Patent No. 6,291,861, which covers key FinFET and semiconductor packaging technology.

Fitch Even represented Katana in an ex parte reexamination of the asserted patent before the USPTO. The reexamination concluded with the USPTO confirming the validity of the challenged claims, a key development that helped pave the way for the favorable trial outcome.

The litigation resulted in a unanimous jury verdict following a five-day trial and nine hours of deliberation. The jury awarded Katana $9.2 million in reasonable royalty damages based on infringement of the upheld patent claim.

“We are proud to have supported Katana’s enforcement efforts by strengthening its IP position during the reexamination process,” said Fitch Even partner Nick Peters. “This outcome is a testament to the resilience of Katana’s patent rights.”
